I have tons of unused old(ish) computers and stuff laying about, so I put them up for sale.. I wrote in the ad that I might be willing to accept an old car as payment.. Today this bloke says he'd like to do a trade, his old MB W123 for my old computers..
I'm quite sure his car looks nothing like this one, but it's the same colour.. I think I'll say yes..
W123 240D, 640k km on the clock..

Awesome.

ALL MY WANTS..... Also the red is stupid sexy.

640,000?!
Damn. You have to take it now, just so that you claim having the car with the highest miles of any oppo-ite.

dude awesome!!! Make a post as soon as you get it!

even if that thing is faded it can look almost that good with a little work! Sounds like a good deal. You know what flavor of 123?

640K?!
It's mint!
Seriously, if he can drive it to your place, take it.

That's fucking awesome. Do that.
![]() 09/02/2014 at 16:45 |

Do it and make a Red Pig replica. You'll be a god amongst Oppos.

Uhm.. I did own an old Scania for 3 days or so, that one had done more than 1000k km.. 640k on a 240d is nothing :)
![]() 09/02/2014 at 16:46 |
|
Yeah, that's what I told him, drive the car here and I'll do the trade (he lives 5 hours from here).
![]() 09/02/2014 at 16:46 |

This is awesome in everyway but with 640k I would be worried a bit. If he can drive it to you then why not though!

Manual or automatic? Either way, go for it. When I moved cross country a couple of years ago I managed to sell one or two of my vintage computers, and then ended up giving the rest away to someone that didn't want to see them tossed as e-waste. Had I known I could have traded them for a Benz I might have reconsidered my decision.

slow, but dead reliable. Assuming 4 speed standard trans and cloth interior if it is a euro version. No sunroof, no passenger mirror. Good car. Slooooooooooooooow though.
![]() 09/02/2014 at 16:48 |
|
If it's not indiscreet, what did you trade it for?
![]() 09/02/2014 at 16:48 |

Manual, I do live in Norway after all, not that many 240Ds with autos here.
![]() 09/02/2014 at 16:49 |

Not traded it yet, but IF this deal goes through I'm giving him 6-7 five year old laptops, and 2 ten year old servers (amd based fileservers of some kind).
![]() 09/02/2014 at 16:51 |

Four speed manual indeed, greyish cloth interior. but it DOES have a passenger mirror (it's a Norwegian car)

640k is not that big of a deal on these engines actually, this car used to be a Taxi way back in the days.

ah even the US market didnt require those till later than that! I had an 83 without one!
Does yours also have to have headlight wipers or was that sweden and finland?
![]() 09/02/2014 at 16:56 |

Surprisingly, they sold a few with the manual here in the US, but given the meager output it didn't seem to have much of an effect on the performance. Kind of like the VW vans I grew up with - regardless of transmission, you weren't going anywhere in a hurry.
I should have guessed from the fact that the mileage was in km that you are someplace where automatics are not the norm.
![]() 09/02/2014 at 16:56 |

Not sure if I'm honest.. Can't quite remember if that was required here at that time, but if they had them in Sweden I'm guessing the cars in Norway had them too, cheaper to build the same car for every nordic country.

As a '77 it could be registered as a classic in Germany, making road tax and insurance pretty cheap. Any similar legislation in Norway?

Awesome! From what I remember you are in Northern Europe to? Hows is it for rust up there?
![]() 09/02/2014 at 16:58 |
|
Yup, if it's older than 30 years it's a classic here :)

Rust-a-plenty up here, but this car is street legal until december 2015 (I just checked), that means it's pretty much no rust on it.

In a car like that you'll reach 60mph eventually, perhaps, one day.. I'm sure :P

Cool! Any plans to drive it instead of the Fiesta?? you got after the Lancer died?
![]() 09/02/2014 at 17:05 |
|
And he lives 5 hours from you?
good luck moving all that by bus if the deal goes through!
Did he described the car?
![]() 09/02/2014 at 17:07 |

It will indeed be my DD in the summer if it's in a decent shape., I'll keep the Fiesta as a DD for the winter.

400k miles isn't that bad for these.
![]() 09/02/2014 at 17:12 |

I'll send him the stuff via mail if the deals goes through, he won't be taking them on the bus :P
He described the car as somewhat tired/bleached by the sun (yes, we DO have sunny days up here :P ), it's road legal until december 2015. I'm sure it smokes like a chimney and stuff, but I've got nothing to lose really, I was planning on dumping those computers anyway.

If it's not slow enough you could always do what my uncle did to his and add a 200 litre auxiliary tank between the rear wheels, which should add another 200 kgs or so to haul around. He did it so that he could drive down to Mexico and top off with dirt-cheap fuel, not knowing that the higher sulfur content of the Mexican fuel was going to eat his engine alive from the inside out. So much for saving money...

I owned a MK1 VW Polo at some point that had the 0,9 litre engine (40bhp).. the MB W123 240D makes that polo seem like a rocket :P I'd rather not find out how a W123 240D wih a 200 litre tank feels like :P

Hmmm, I wonder what I could get for my NeXT Cube w/ printer?

All that extra weight AND very low compression (a tad important on a Diesel engine) thanks the the rings and bearings having been eaten away by sulfuric acid.

Depends on what version I guess.. The top of the line developers editions goes for a few thousand $ US

Well how about that! I might just have to look into it then. I got it off Craigslist, mainly for the Magnesium case. I was going to repurpose it as a home server, but I never quite got around to building it out.

I guess I will have to put it all together and try booting it up. I have nearly everything available for it, so it might be interesting.

You should do that mate, you could be sitting on a gold mine.

Well, with the Norwegian speeding tickets in mind, driving a W123 diesel might be a pretty smart thing to do :)

Good point, not that I've ever gotten a ticket in the 14 years I've been driving anyway.
